“Life is both a major and a minor key, just open up the chord…”

It’s official! January 31, 2008

We’re homeowners. Everything is signed, and we have the keys.

Many, many thanks to all of you who kept good thoughts for us. I very much appreciate each and every one of you. (((HUGS)))

In other news, it was a strange afternoon. For the second time in my life, I locked the keys in the car. Of course, I realized that just as the car doors locked…

We were home, but the house key is on the ring with the car key. It was freezing cold out. Hubby had church rehearsal, so wouldn’t be home for hours – even if he left work and came home to let us in before he went to rehearsal, we’d have had to wait outside for two hours until he got home. Couldn’t do that. The neighbors weren’t home, of course… nothing to do but find a way in. I found one of the windows that wasn’t locked (one of the few times I was thankful that there are so many storm windows missing here) – but I couldn’t open it. Between the dampness of the wood, and the fact that I didn’t have anything to get a grip on from the outside, it wasn’t budging. I couldn’t get in the shed, as that key was also in the car, so I looked in the garage, hoping to find something I could use for some leverage. We don’t keep much in the garage – the picnic table, and some odds and ends yard stuff. Anyway, to make a long story short, I used a grill turner, a shovel, and finally a piece of wood I found in the yard, and managed to get the window open enough to hoist Princess through.

Once we were inside, my next order of business was getting the window closed. Didn’t want the cats or the HEAT getting outdoors, particularly with a snow storm predicted for later in the evening. Two things happened next. The door to the room closed all the way (no door knob), “trapping” me inside. I was able to open it with a butter knife Princess slid under the door, so that wasn’t major. The bad thing that happened was – while I was trying to close the window, the glass broke. It also wouldn’t go down more than halfway. What fun! Once I got out of the room, I scrounged in the basement and fortunately found a piece of chipboard that fit the opening. I screwed it to the wall on the inside, and stuffed towels at the top of the window. It doesn’t look pretty, and it isn’t perfect – there is a small gap on one side I couldn’t reach because the bed that is in there is too heavy for me to move, and it was behind that. Still, better than a gaping hole! Sheesh!

One more thing to fix before we leave here. We told them we’d paint inside, so we are going to, and we’ll fix the window, since I’m responsible for that. The important thing is – we’re going to be moving on, and in only a few short months we’ll be living in a place we actually own. It will be the third move in less than two years – but it will be the last move, and how great is that?

(I’ll just ignore the fact that my foot twinges every time I think about the actual physical move, lol.)

A quick bring-you-up-to-date.

For those who don’t know, the big thing I requested good thoughts about is coming to pass. We are – eep! – buying a house. It is a very, very scary proposition. Neither of us has ever bought a house before, so we’re trying to make sure we do everything we need to do, and in the right order. We went in with the inspector yesterday. He says it actually looks pretty good for such an old house, has a lot of nice updates. There are several things that need to be taken care of, but he gave the impression that they weren’t major. Hubby wasn’t overly concerned by everything he had to say, but I’ll admit to being completely overwhelmed. I want to settle down – but I’m afraid.

Anyway, looks like there is a good chance we’ll be closing in the next couple of weeks. We’re going to start with the cleaning and some of the repairs, then begin moving over what we can. We’re going to continue living where we are until the end of the school year, so that we don’t have to make the girls change schools mid-year. It will make for a couple of tight months, but in the long run, our house payment will be less than what we are paying for rent, so it will be worth it.

There you have it. I’ll be back when I have more time, to fill in details and such. Probably won’t be until next week, though, as I have company coming in for the weekend from out of town (and no, we’re not anywhere near ready – you’ll just have to deal with some mess, ’cause you know our minds/time have been spent elsewhere. I know you love us anyway, and don’t care – but we do! If I hadn’t hurt my wrist yesterday being a klutz, I’d be hitting “whirlwind mode” tonight to get everything taken care of).

Thank you all for all of your good thoughts. We truly appreciate it.
