I have a strange trio of songs running through my head – they play in rotation, bits of the song at a time. “Rock Star” – Nickleback’s latest single, “It’s Not Too Late” by Air Supply, and “Who Knew,” Pink’s new single.
Another busy day June 24, 2007
I got up this morning and went right to work again. Finished putting the summer clothes away, then went outside. Walked the back yard, picked up all of the twigs (there were quite a few, we’ve got lots of trees), watered the garden, then mowed the lawn. We don’t have a huge back yard, but it is big enough, and doing all of that took me a while. By that time, both girls were out wanting to play. I raked a spot behind the garage to make sure there was nothing sharp there, and got out their pool. It’s an inflatable one, with a little slide and a sprinkler arch. Got that all up, using the hand pump, and they played until they were freezing, because of course they didn’t want to let the water warm up first.
Hubby got home from church about 10 minutes after I finished all of that up. I’ve taken a two hour break for lunch, and to catch up on line, but now I’m going to get back to work. I’ve decided I’m going to start going through all of the unpacked boxes downstairs. Chances are, I’ll find other things that can go to the yard sale!
The answer is 43 June 23, 2007
the question – how many boxes of books did I sort out today? Yes, 43 of them. And that was just what was in the garage. I’m not going to touch any of the many boxes that are in the basement, at least not anytime soon!
I dragged a table outside the garage door, and sorted there, in the sunshine (got a bit of a burn). Started at 10 this morning, took a half hour lunch break, and finished up at 6:30pm. Hundreds and hundreds of books. Literally. As E said when he was here last week…
“you have a National Archive’s worth of stuff!!”
He wasn’t exaggerating much. :p
Anyway, we’re having a big yard sale at my folks’ house after the 4th of July. While I was sorting summer clothes this morning (I got up early and got to work), I decided that I would work on the books – they needed to be sorted anyway, and then we could put whatever we didn’t want to keep into the sale. I didn’t pull as many as I thought I would to get rid of, but there are 11 boxes of them set to go to the sale (on top of the several hundred books that are already up there from the last time we had a yard sale).
Needless to say, I’m tired now. Boxes of books are NOT light, doesn’t matter if they’re hardcover or paperback. But, I did make some progress, and that’s the important thing. You can actually get down the middle of the garage now – there is a walkway.
We’re going to have pizza for dinner tonight, and watch a movie or two, depending on how awake we are later on. We watched a good scary movie last night – The Descent. It was much better than The Cave that we watched last week. They came out about the same time, and have some very minor similarities, plot-wise (they both involve people trapped in a cave system in the mountains, being hunted by humanoid creatures that have evolved to survive in the caves), but are both very different movies. We liked The Cave, but The Descent was much more scary. I was half-afraid I’d have nightmares last night – usually we don’t watch horror movies when there isn’t time to watch something else after – but I didn’t, which is a good thing. Tonight, I’ve picked Lucky # Slevin and Elizabethtown to watch, but I have a feeling we’ll only get through one of them, lol.
Pizza’s here, so I’m gonna scoot!
Good things June 21, 2007
Thank God for a new service offered by our local video store – disc resurfacing. Whoot!!! I can listen to my U218 Singles cd again! Yay! I listened to it on the way home. What is even better is that halfway home, Princess says, “hey, this is a really good cd! Would you get me my own copy of it?” And then, Vertigo came on, and Peanut was singing along. I love my girlies!
*cry* June 21, 2007
I’m taking Peanut to school to register her for kindergarten this morning on the way to work. My baby is growing up too, too fast.
We decided to keep the girls in the school of choice district, which means I’ll still be doing all the driving – but when we looked our resident district up on the state school board site, the school of choice district outranks them, grade-wise, by a long shot. So, I guess I can put up with the hassle, to keep them in a district with a better program. There are some disadvantages (such as band being before school in 5th grade, eep!), but overall, I think the advantages far outweigh any negatives. My boss was complaining that I might as well stay at the school after I take the kids in the mornings (in the fall) because Peanut only has a half day. Well, at our resident district, she’d only have a half day, too, and it’s only 10 minutes more round trip to go to the school of choice district to pick her up.
I guess the thing is – we can always choose to change them to our resident district in the coming years, but once we give up our spots in the school of choice district, we can’t get them back.
Trying to take care of myself June 18, 2007
Now that I don’t have to take Princess to school before work, we don’t have to leave quite so early. (Too bad I can’t manage to make myself sleep in!!) So, knowing that I’ve had issues at work with not getting breaks, and not being able to eat until 3pm when 2nd shift comes in, I’ve decided I’m going to try to make myself eat breakfast before we go. I have never been much of a breakfast person – eating much before 10am is too early for me… BUT I can’t keep going not being able to eat at all until so late in the afternoon, which is what has been happening, and has been contributing (along with the heat and being overworked) to how exhausted I’ve been every day when I leave work. It’s not healthy for me, and it is dangerous. I was so worn out on Thursday and Friday that I had to pull off the road because I couldn’t keep my eyes open. Bad enough when I’m in the car alone, much worse when I have the kids with me.
So, I’m going to do breakfast. I just finished eating a bowl of cereal. I’m going to take a cheese stick with me to have for a snack in a couple of hours. I need to eat lunch around 1pm, but if no one else is in at work again today, I won’t be able to. If they are there, I’m going to take my break. That’s all there is to it. Having a good work ethic won’t mean squat if I collapse. It’s supposed to be over 90 and high humidity today, too.
Time to get the kids up, and to get out in my garden before we have to go.
Company June 17, 2007
We had a visitor yesterday for a few hours, a dear old friend we haven’t seen in probably 8 years, since he moved out of state. We met him the same place hubby and I met each other – housekeeping at the University. We were part of our boss’s best team, the one they sent to do the special jobs, lol, because we did good, thorough work. He and hubby are friends, too, though I used to be the closest to him. We used to spend hours and hours just hanging out and talking. Can’t drive past a cemetery, a Chinese buffet, or even make a pot of chili without thinking of E.
I was a little nervous about his visit – it has been so long, I wasn’t sure if we would all still get along as well as we used to, plus, we’ve all changed some… but it was a really good visit. We had some time to just sit and chat in between the times the girls wanted attention. We ended up in the back yard before he left. He’s really goofy, and had the girls laughing up a storm as he chased them all over. We kicked a soccer ball around for a while, and just generally had a nice time. I was sad to see him go. He’s hoping to bring his wife up the next time he comes up – I really want to meet her. I think we’ll all get along well. That’s one of those cases where it is too bad they live so far away, because it would be nice to get together. They’re big movie buffs like we are, too.
Speaking of movies, we watched a couple last night after E left. The Cave, which was pretty decent – actually had some good scary moments in it, for a PG-13 flick. We also watched a relatively recent Jackie Chan movie, New Police Story – it was very good. Different from most Jackie Chan movies we’ve seen, though, in that it was a serious film – only a few moments of humor.
I didn’t sleep well last night. It was too hot, and I just couldn’t settle down, so I’m tired today. I got up at 7am, and started sorting clothes in Princess’s room – we don’t have all of the winter stuff packed up yet, so I’m working on that. Then, I went out and took care of the garden for the morning. I need to replant some of my early corn, where the critter got it. One of my tomato plants has been pretty well chewed, but it is hanging in there, and has new growth showing. I also need to take care of some little bugs on one of my pepper plants and one of the hills of squash. Other than that, it is looking pretty good. *knock wood* I still need to finish planting – my beets at the very least. I might get around to that today. I don’t know. Mil will be here in a couple of hours. I have no idea what she has planned for the day. She doesn’t ever just come visit – she comes with something she wants to do in our yard or whatever. Hubby says she’s bringing fertilizer. I suppose she’ll want to put that in the garden, though I’m not sure I’m ready for that yet. I want my plants to get a good deep root base, and fertilizing too soon will encourage a shallow base. They’ve only been growing a week now, as far as the things I planted from seed go. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed for a nice visit. She’s been irritable because we put her off two weekends in a row, as we had other things going on. Wait until she finds out that we have literally every weekend in July already booked up. (the summer is going to fly by…)
We were planning to have a cookout today, but she’s bringing roast for lunch. If she leaves early enough, we’ll have a cookout for dinner, but I have a feeling we’ll all be too worn out for that. Either which way, we’re planning to watch Blood Diamond tonight – we borrowed it from hubby’s friend at work (she borrowed our Gangs of New York), and I want to make sure it gets back to her in a timely manner.
trying new tricks June 13, 2007
something has been digging up and eating my corn sprouts. I don’t know if it is squirrels or rabbits – I guess I thought rabbits only ate the tops, but I could be wrong. Anyway, after I watered this morning, I sprinkled a mix of ground black and cayenne pepper around the veggies. I’ll see if that works today. There is an organic spray I can get that is supposed to help repel critters, but I’m going to try not to spend money if I can help it. I also need to put some more diatomaceous earth around my plants, but it won’t happen today. It is going to be miserably hot – is already sticky and humid. (that’s what I get for telling Nina last night that it wasn’t too bad out here. Ugh!) I might have to water the plants again tonight. I’ll have to see what they’re like later this evening.
Yay! June 12, 2007
when I checked on the garden last night, sure enough, I have squash sprouted! In fact, all 6 hills have sprouted. AND, there are several places where the corn is popping through, too!
Now, I just need to keep everything healthy and growing. Oh, and I need to finish the planting, too. This weekend, I’ll get the beets and stuff in. Good thing they don’t mind being planted later!
*cough* *hack* *cough* June 10, 2007
I am sick. I am pretty sure with what is coming out of my head, I have a sinus infection to go along with the cold I picked up somewhere in the last couple of days. I thought it was allergies yesterday, something I don’t normally suffer from. The kids were both gone, so we thought we’d take in a movie. (We went to see 300 at the cheap theater. EXCELLENT film, great score!) We got out of the car at the theater, and I was just freezing. On a sunny, 80-degree day. I had to wear my coat to the movie. We had been planning to go see Spidey 3, as well, because we have free passes to that one, but hubby decided he better bring me home instead. Took my temp when we got here, it was 101. No wonder I was cold, lol. My throat hurts from the stuff draining down the back of it, and is very dry, which is what makes me cough, and my face is swollen up around the bridge of my nose (I look sooooo beautiful today *rolls eyes*) and my left eye has been dripping all night long.
Anyway, it kinda sucks that I’m sick, because here I am with a good four hours all to myself – the girls aren’t home yet, and hubby’s off to church – and I don’t have the energy to do anything. When I’m home alone, that’s usually when I get the most done around here. My muscles are so worn out that when hubby asked for a back scratch this morning, it lasted all of 30 seconds before I literally couldn’t hold my arm up anymore. How pathetic is that!
At least I’m in a good mood. That’s something, right? And… I think I have a sprout coming up in my garden! When I went to look last night, I could see the edge of one of my zucchini seeds. I’m hoping it is because it is growing! *fingers crossed* Oh, I put diatomaceous earth (DE) around my plants yesterday. It is supposed to help with the ants. We’ll see! I need to get some energy together so I can go water my plants. Should be done in the morning. I’ll have to put more of the DE around them, then, but it hasn’t rained like it was supposed to, and I don’t want them to dry out.
